Another attractive and photogenic site in Zojoji temple is the One-Thousand statues of Jizo (Small Buddha) beside the main hall, which were actually more than 1,300 Buddhas, according to a temple monk. The adorable stone dolls were donated by the temple followers and symbolize children’s well-being and health. Seeing so many tiny buddhas queuing up in lines might be impressive. It is also another distinctive site in Japan’s culture.
The temple followers’ parents wish their kids healthy growth by devoting the pretty statues in the temple. That’s why they wear colorful clothes and pretty caps on their heads, standing together with pinwheels. Each Jizo has the same face and body style but shows its character by the outfit. Some wear traditional clothes, and others wear costumes of Manga or anime characters. I had yet to see such a variety of Jizo statues with unique fashions in other areas at a time.
