It looks delicious but not edible: Food Sample Making.

Have you heard about Japanese food samples? You might be familiar with accessories like key chains featuring sushi, tempura, or other Japanese food replicas.
The food sample has been developed in the Japanese restaurant industry and has become quite a unique part of modern Japanese culture. International tourists in Japan might be surprised when they learn that the foods and meals on the showcase in front of restaurants are fake because they look so authentic and delicious.

Ganso Shokuhin Sample-Ya is one of the famous food sample shops in Kappabashi, Tokyo. It produces excellent food samples, such as sushi, hamburgers, and sandwiches. You may not believe they are made of wax and artificial color pigments. The shop has over 90 years of history and has been developing its business to meet new market demands. It started as a manufacturer of replica meals for restaurants or food specialists in Japan, and later, it expanded to more familiar items to people, such as accessories with sushi or tempura samples. Now, the shop offers visitors a hands-on experience event to teach them how to make food samples themselves. In this blog post, I want to tell you about my experience making food samples at Ganso Shokuhin Sample-Ya!

First, please watch the official video of the shop on YouTube. You will understand that it is not so tricky and how fun it looks. The talk in the video is Japanese, but you can read English subtitles.

And now it’s my turn. Before I show you the photos of my experience, I want to show you my works of the food samples: prawn tempura, eggplant tempura, and lettuce. Do they look nice??

Okay, now I will show you how I enjoyed and was excited about making food samples. First, I made tempura samples.

Then, next, I tried the lettuce sample. It’s the most exciting part of my experience.

You can find it easy and fun, right? I guarantee you it’s worth trying. You cannot have such a unique and amazing experience anywhere else but Tokyo. It takes 30 to 60 minutes.
